Curved stone retaining wall with a capped top, timber slat screening and new lawn

Retaining walls in Perth

A retaining wall holds back soil, turns a sloping yard into usable space and gives a garden structure. We build retaining walls with drainage and stability in mind, so they do their job and look right.

What a retaining wall does

Retaining walls support a change in ground level. They create flat areas for lawns, paving and gardens on sloping blocks, protect paths and structures from soil movement and can be a feature in their own right.

Built to last

Water pressure behind a wall is one of the main reasons walls fail, so drainage is part of how we plan and build. The wall's footing, materials and height all matter too.

Taller walls, and walls close to boundaries or structures, can require engineering and approval. We will raise this early so you know what to expect before the work starts.

Materials and finish

Retaining walls can be finished in natural stone or other materials, to match your paving, house and garden. We can talk through options and costs when we visit, and coordinate the wall with earthworks, paving and planting.

Retaining Walls questions.

Do retaining walls need council approval?

It depends on the height, the location and how close the wall is to boundaries and buildings. Taller walls can require engineering and approval, and we will raise this when we assess your site.

Why is drainage important behind a retaining wall?

Water builds up behind a wall and puts pressure on it. Good drainage allows that water to escape and is a major factor in how long a wall lasts.

Can you build a retaining wall in stone?

Yes. Natural stone is a popular finish for retaining walls and works well with paving and gardens. Cost and suitability depend on the height, the load and the site.

Can you level a sloping yard so I can add a lawn or paving?

That is a common use for retaining walls. We can combine earthworks, retaining walls, paving and lawn so the space is usable and finished.
